Yu Ziyou and Zhong Wan used to be very close companions, but fate caused them to end up serving different masters and becoming bitter enemies. Zhong Wan fled to the borders with their young masters after their failed attempt at gaining the throne. However, Zhong Wan's childhood bond with Yu Ziyou proved useful as he pretended they had a close relationship, lending him personal items and dropping hints of a deep connection. This lie allowed Zhong Wan to live better as the Yu Clan's presence in the imperial court was powerful. As rumors of their "epic love affair" spread, even Yu Ziyou, who was far away in the capital city and had been brainwashed for seven years, believed it. Eventually, the story became so believable that Yu Ziyou began to wonder if it was true.
